More and more people ride their bicycles in everyday life as well as in leisure time. The bicycle is long ago an important economic good, which saveguards about 280,000 jobs.

Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry merge and become the "Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry" (CONEBI)

The Association of the European Two-Wheeler Parts' and Accessories' Industry (COLIPED), established in 1960, and the Association of the European Bicycle Industry (COLIBI), established in 1973, took the decision at the last General Assembly in Brussels on 19th November to merge into one entity and become CONEBI , the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry.


Germany: New Advisory Board supports the implementation of the National Cycling Strategy

The Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt appointed a broad range of experts from organisations, universities, institutions and the public administration to the advisory board: 18 persons from the fields of health, sports, tourism, economy, environment and transportation planning. Likewise, delegates from the federal states and from the municipalities are part of the board.


Germany: Documentation of the third nationwide workshop on cycle highways published

The experts dealt with crossings, parallel routing, and linkages. They declared that the planned "Cycle Highway Ruhr (RS1)" is generally realisable. Furthermore, the group discussed about extended possibilities for funding cycling highways by federal programs, drawing comparisons to channels, railway lines and motorways.

250 experts from all over Germany came to Düsseldorf's congress center and debated on urban bicycle traffic.


Switzerland: Successful pilot test of cycling friendly traffic lights in Basel

Since 2013, experiments focus on two solutions for cycling friendly traffic lights facilities: permitting cyclists to turn right during the red phase and street crossing together with the pedestrians during their green period. The results are generally positive. Hence the Department for Building and Transport will request a change in traffic law from the Federal Roads Office. Thereby, the pilot test solutions can be implemented permanently.


UK: Mayor unveils his 18-mile "Crossrail for the bike"

The north-south route will run for more than 3 mile, the east-west route will run over 18 miles. They cost about 913 million pounds and will be opened in 2016.


Who owns the city? A public "road space justice report" from Berlin

In many European urban centres, the full potential for cycling has not yet been realized. The simple reason is that towns and cities still primarily accommodate car users and neglect cyclists. "Re-allocating road space" is therefore a demand often heard from cycling advocacy groups, including ECF, without specifying to what extent this should be done. A study from Berlin took a closer look at this issue and came to some interesting conclusions.

The Altona borough administration presents first steps towards a new cycling concept, by starting an online participation platform. Until June 30th 2014, users can send their hints, concerning local cycling problems in Altona via the webpage www.fahrrad-altona.de


Germany: Call for projects which serve the "National Cycling Strategy 2020"

In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) supports innovative projects in the field of cycling, which serve the implementation of the National Cycling Strategy 2020 (NRVP) and support its aims also with regard to the linkage between cycling and other means of transport.


Foundation of the European Cycle Logistics Federation (ELCF) with more than 140 members

On April 12th 2014, more than 200 delegates from 25 nations met for the 2nd European Cycle Logistics Conference in the Dutch City of Nijmegen. They discussed the large potential of different cargo bike related business models, which can contribute to inner city traffic reduction.
