EU projekt "CHIPS"
Preliminary planning for a cycling highway connecting Frankfurt to Frankfurt Airport

Preliminary planning for a cycling highway connecting Frankfurt to Frankfurt Airport: EU supports the project managed by the Frankfurt-RheinMain Regional Association with 350,000 euros
The Metropolitan Region Frankfurt/RheinMain European Office belonging to the Frankfurt-RheinMain Regional Association raised subsidies of about 350,000 euros for the EU project "CHIPS" (Cycle Highways Innovation for smarter People Transport and Spatial Planning). They intend the planning of a cycling highway from the city of Frankfurt to Frankfurt Airport across a forest area. Also in planning is a service station. The collaborative project gets about 220,000 euros for the Frankfurt-RheinMain Regional Association, and 130,000 euros for its partners Fraport AG and Gateway Gardens. The project is to last three years.
CHIPS provides the Frankfurt-RheinMain Regional Association with the opportunity to develop and test optimal solutions for a wide range of topics, together with its partners from the metropolitan regions of Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Neckar, Belgium, England and the Netherlands:
- How to plan a cycling highway across the woods (aspects of road surface, street lighting, legal duty to maintain safety, etc.)?
- How to connect cycling with other means of transport?
- Which services do cycling commuters expect?
The Frankfurt-RheinMain Regional Association also intends to develop a mobility centre nearby Frankfurt Airport. Those who cycle from Frankfurt to their workplaces at Frankfurt Airport should get ideal conditions for bicycle parking, battery charging, repair, maintenance and other services.
